In 1981, Mike Dalton and Mike Fichman created, organized and promoted the Steel Challenge "World Speed Shooting Championship" in order to develop a shooting competition that would make speed shooting a spectator sport. The Steel Challenge has gained such notoriety that it is even described in Wikipedia.

In 1998, they founded the Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA) as a means to organize steel shooters in local clubs for state, regional, national, and international events. The SCSA also established the rules for conducting Steel Challenge matches worldwide.

Steel Challenge matches were designed to be shooting events which would also be easily understood and enjoyed by non-shooters who would see the competition and find within themselves a greater desire to join the shooting sports.

The annual World Championship match was held at the ISI Shootists ranges in Piru, CA through 2011. The 1981 inagural match grew from 70 shooters and $20,000 in cash and prizes the first year to almost 250 shooters and over $390,000 in cash and prizes by 2007. Also in 2007, Outdoor Channel and SigArms awarded a $30,000 cash bonus to Max Michel for the fastest time breaking the 80 seconds barrier.

In late 2007, the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) purchased the Steel Challenge and the Steel Challenge Shooting Association from Mike & Mike. In 2012, USPSA moved the match dates from August to November and the  venue from California to Florida.

Mike Dalton and Jim O'Young knew there was a strong demand for a premier steel match to be held on the West Coast. In 2011, with their guidance, efforts, and amazing sponsor support, the West Coast Steel Championships (WCSC) emerged and was held at the ISI Shootists ranges.

In 2012, The Briley West Coast Steel Championships , with over 200 shooters and over $75,000 in cash and prizes, was held on June 16 and 17. In 2016, the match had nearly 400 shooters and over $150,000 in cash and prizes.

Thanks to the sponsors, staff, shooters, volunteers and especially to Mike Dalton

and Jim O'Young for making the 2016 Briley West Coast Steel Championships the most successful and enjoyable so far.
